Self-tape guide

How do I record a self-tape?

If I can see you and I can hear you, that is nearly all I need. A phone is fine.

  1. Find a quiet room and face the lightSit or stand facing a window or a lamp, with a plain wall behind you. Turn the phone on its side so the picture is landscape.
  2. Frame head and shouldersUnless the brief asks for something else. I need to see your eyes.
  3. Use a reader if you canAsk someone to read the other lines from beside the camera, so your eyeline sits close to the lens. They should be quieter than you. If you do not have a reader, record your lines with appropriate spaces, as if you are having the conversation. Leaving a silence is fine.
  4. Make a choiceDecide who this person is and play that. A clear choice that is not quite right tells me more than a safe one.
  5. Send no more than two takes of a sceneIf you send two takes, they should be significantly different versions of the scene.
  6. Put your name on the fileYour name, the role and the production. We still receive tapes with no name on them.
  7. Send a link we can downloadUse the upload link in the brief if there is one. Otherwise send a link that lets us download the file, not just watch it.

What does not matter on a self-tape?

An expensive camera, a ring light, a backdrop or an edit. Nobody has lost a part because of the wallpaper.

What if I am under 18?

Ask a parent or guardian to help you record and send the tape, and to be the contact on the email.

How many takes should I send on a self-tape?

Two at most. Catherine Willis asks that if you send two takes, they are significantly different versions of the scene. The UK self-tape guidelines agreed in 2021 by the Casting Directors' Guild, Equity, the Personal Managers' Association and the Co-operative Personal Management Association set the same limit: no more than two versions of each scene.

What do casting directors look for in an audition?

A clear choice. Catherine Willis told Spotlight in 2024 that casting is about finding people who present a fully rounded character quite early on, and that the worst thing people do is become very generic. Do not try to second-guess what is being looked for. Decide who the character is and commit to it.

Do I need an agent to get an audition in the UK?

No, though most parts are cast through agents. Casting directors send breakdowns to agents, who suggest their clients. Without an agent you can still be seen through open casting calls, through a Spotlight profile, and by inviting casting directors to see your work. Around 40% of the actors Catherine Willis casts are people she had never met before.

How do I apply for an open casting call?

Follow the instructions in the call. Each open call from CW Casting is published on the open calls page, with who can apply, the closing date and how to take part. You do not need an agent or experience unless the call says so. If you are under 18, please ask permission of a parent or guardian and use their contact details.
